I see an error message and am unable to load games on my browser? What do I do?

If you've ever tried launching a game and received a message saying:

—don’t worry. You're not alone, and it's an easy fix in most cases.

🖥️ Is My Browser Compatible with WebGL 2?

To quickly check if your browser supports WebGL 2, visit this page:

If you see a spinning cube, congratulations—your browser supports WebGL 2 and Lumosity games should load and play normally.

If you don’t see the cube or you see an error message instead, your browser or device likely doesn’t support WebGL 2, or hardware acceleration might be turned off.

In that case, follow the troubleshooting steps below to fix it.

1. Update Your Browser

Make sure you're using the latest version of a supported browser:

  • Google Chrome

Open Chrome → Click the three dots (top-right) > Help > About Google Chrome → Chrome will auto-check for updates and install them → Click Relaunch to finish.

  • Mozilla Firefox

Open Firefox → Click the three lines (top-right) > Help > About Firefox → Firefox will check for updates and install automatically → Click Restart to Update if prompted.

  • Microsoft Edge

Open Edge → Click the three dots (top-right) > Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge → Edge will auto-update → Relaunch the browser if needed → Safari (v15+ on macOS Monterey or newer)

  • Safari

Click the Apple menu  > System Settings (or System Preferences) → Go to General > Software Update → If an update is available for Safari/macOS, click Update Now.

Safari updates are bundled with macOS updates.

🚫 Note: WebGL 2 is not supported on Internet Explorer or some older browser versions.

2. Enable Hardware Acceleration

WebGL2 needs hardware acceleration turned on. Here's how you can enable the same across browsers.

Google Chrome

  1. Click the three-dot menu (top-right) → Settings
  2. Go to System
  3. Toggle ON: “Use hardware acceleration when available”
  4. Click Relaunch

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Click the menu icon (≡) → Settings
  2. Scroll to Performance
  3. Uncheck “Use recommended performance settings”
  4. Check “Use hardware acceleration when available”
  5. Restart Firefox

Microsoft Edge

  1. Click the three-dot menuSettings
  2. Go to System and performance
  3. Toggle ON: “Use hardware acceleration when available”
  4. Click Restart

Safari (macOS only)

Safari enables hardware acceleration by default — there’s no single switch, but you can tweak advanced settings.

To ensure it’s on:

  1. Go to Safari > Settings > Advanced
  2. Check “Show Develop menu in menu bar”
  3. In the top menu, go to Develop > Experimental Features
  4. Make sure the following are enabled:
    • GPU Process: Canvas Rendering
    • WebGL and WebGL 2.0
    • Metal (if available)

There’s no relaunch button, but changes apply instantly.

3. Try a Different Browser

If your current browser still doesn't support WebGL 2 (even after updating), try switching to another one listed above. Sometimes certain system configurations work better with specific browsers.
